Partial regional coverage is available for Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and British Columbia. Combined, these regions represent about 80% of Canadian ED visits."

Changes in emergency visits because of health issues due to substance consumption during the outbreak of COVID-19 differed depending on the substance type. For example, there was a decrease in the number of people visiting the emergency department after consuming alcohol and an increase related to the consumption of other substances, such as opioids and cannabis. This graph shows the number of people who visited the emergency department in Canada because of substance consumption, in the period from March to September 2019 and March to September 2020, by substance type.
