South Indian and South Pacific Ocean seasons are defined to start on July 1 of the previous year. The 2023 season therefore runs from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023.
In the 2023 season, roughly half of hurricanes tracked worldwide had a maximum category * or *, meaning a sustained wind speeds of *** knots or higher. In total, the season also saw ** hurricanes with a category * or above, which are thus qualified as major hurricanes. Of these, were category * hurricanes, with sustained wind speeds of *** knots or more.
