The 10 warmest years since records started have all occurred since 2015, with 2024 the hottest on record. That year saw the global land and ocean surface temperature rise to 1.29 degrees Celsius above the 20th-century average. While periods of warming have naturally occurred since the Earth formed some 4.5 billion years ago, the temperature rise in recent decades has been recorded at a much faster rate, bringing about extreme weather events that are affecting all corners of the planet.
