Citation formats

Mobile payments in various Southeast Asian countries are expected to increase significantly between 2020 and 2025, with some eventually overtaking Australia. Mobile wallet transaction volume in China, India, and Japan, however, is expected to remain much larger than in other countries. This is not surprising, as the proximity mobile payment adoption in these countries - plus South Korea - was among the highest in the world in 2021. This can be attributed to an early adoption of major payment apps. The user count of Alipay in China, for instance, was estimated to be around nearly a billion in 2019. Mobile payments across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, however, are expected to grow heavily following an expected e-commerce boom in Southeast Asia between 2020 and 2025.
