An analysis on how the environmental, social and governance (ESG) score is correlated to U.S. companies' return on equity (ROE) between 2008 and 2018 was moderately inconclusive. While it did appear to show that companies in the bottom ** percent of ESG scoring generated a higher ROE, more telling was the difference between different ESG scoring framework providers. In some cases, the ESG framework used created a bigger difference in ROE than the ESG score itself. Return on equity (ROE) is a measure of the financial performance of a company relative to its market capitalization through dividing their net income by shareholders' equity.
