The global consumption of nitrogenous fertilizers increased from 49.25 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare of cropland in 1990 to some 65.4 kilograms in 2022. Nitrogen is one of the main essential nutrients needed for plant growth. Examples of nitrogenous fertilizers include ammonia, urea, ammonium nitrate, and ammonium sulfate.
