As of 2024, iron ore was the most voluminously produced of the minerals that are used in the production of batteries, at *** billion metric tons of iron content. Nevertheless, iron ore has many uses beyond batteries. Lithium, a critical material for battery production with up to half of its consumption attributed to that purpose, had a much lower production volume that year. Global lithium production amounted to ** metric tons (excluding U.S. production) in 2024.
