"Tencha" refers to the plucked and processed tea leaves that are mainly ground into "matcha". "Gyokuro", the category with the second-highest unit price, refers to a type of green tea grown under the shade of straw mats for several weeks before being harvested, similar to "tencha". However, this variety is commonly consumed as rolled leaves instead of in powder form.
The price of crude green tea in Japan is influenced by the type, the harvest season, and the quality of tea leaves, with the young leaves of the first harvest of a year commonly reaching a higher price point. Furthermore, the export boom of matcha has further pushed tencha demand up, resulting in rapidly rising unit prices.
