Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada has experienced a significant decline in the number of immigrants. This should not be surprising given the collective desire to limit the number of arrivals to Canada. In this context, it appears that Canadians are considering refugees to be a lower, or at least less pressing, priority than in 2016. In the Atlantic provinces, for example, while more than **** of residents considered refugees to be a priority immigration category in 2016, this share had fallen to only ** percent by 2020.
