Reserves are delimited areas created to protect a natural heritage (biological and geological) with regulations taking into account the local context.
The diversity of the status of these reserves reflects the French history of protection of natural areas. Natural nature reserves (RNN) originated from the ecologist movement, while the hunting community focused on hunting and wildlife reserves (RCFS), and national hunting and wildlife reserves (RNCFS).
RNCFS are the types of reserves most widespread in France.
