Worldwide, about half of women are not free to make their own decision regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights. The situation in Western and Central Africa is of particular concern. According to a recent study between 2007 and 2018, only seven in ten women in Nigeria had the power to say no to sex. When taking into account all three indicators, i.e., power to say no to sex, to decide on contraception, and on healthcare, only 46 percent of Nigerian women had the freedom to decide on their own.
