To be classified as a victim of stalking in the Supplemental Victimization Survey, the respondent must have experienced a repeated course of conduct that either caused them substantial emotional distress or to fear for their safety or the safety of someone they know or would cause a reasonable person to fear for their safety or the safety of someone they know.
More than one type of stalking behavior was possible.

In 2016, about ** percent of victims of traditional stalking in the United States were being following around and/or watched by their perpetrator. About ** percent of victims had unwanted items, such as cards, letters, presents, or flowers left or sent to them by their stalker.
