Impact of super-aged society

Due to the low birth rates and the high life expectancy, the number of people aged 65 and older in Japan is increasing and is projected to reach a share of over 38 percent of the population in Japan by 2060. This is reflected in the growing number of residents in nursing homes for the elderly. Like many other aging societies, Japan is experiencing a shortage of physicians and medical staff. The Japanese government has aimed to reduce the shortage by inviting foreign workers into the country through programs like the technical intern training program.

Long-term care insurance

The long-term care insurance (LTCI) system is established to aid the increasing number of people who need long-term care or support. Workers over 40 years of age pay an income-based premium and can access any benefits from the age of 65. Since its launch in 2000, the monthly number of people using long-term care services has shown steady growth and is expected to increase further. As a result, the annual expenses for the LTCI system have risen as well.
