According to a survey on online travel agencies (OTA) usage conducted in June 2023, Booking.com was the leading online travel agency used in Vietnam as chosen by ** percent of the respondents. Traveloka was a close second as ** percent of the respondents had used this agency before.

Online travel market in Vietnam

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam had a rapidly-growing tourism industry, in which online travel played an increasingly important role. According to forecasts, the sales from online travel and tourism would soon surpass offline sales. In addition, travel, mobility, and accommodation have been accounting for the highest e-commerce expenditure among internet users in Vietnam. Although international platforms such as Booking.com, Agoda, and Traveloka currently dominate the market based on usage, local companies like mytour.vn and Vntrip.com have been gaining awareness from consumers in the country.

Impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on online travel in Vietnam

Vietnam was not spared from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global tourism industry. The country has been closed to international tourists since the beginning of 2020, leading to a nosedive in the number of inbound arrivals. The tourism sector has since been relying on domestic tourists for the hope of recovery. Even though Vietnam has been able to flatten the infection rate curve, online travel categories still suffered a decrease in e-commerce expenditure. On the other hand, there have been some positive signs from the spending intention among Vietnamese consumers on domestic holidays, indicating a potential for recovery of the domestic tourism segment.
