Subscribers are those who have made conceiving contracts with NHK based on the possession of an apparatus that can receive the broadcasts of NHK in accordance with the provisions of the Broadcasting Act. The terrestrial contract refers to a broadcast reception contract for the reception of terrestrial television broadcasting only.

NHK was founded in 1926 and re-established as a public broadcaster following a new broadcast law in 1950.
