In 2023, Brazil’s number one most exported product was soybean. This agricultural product contributed roughly ** billion U.S. dollars to the Brazilian total export value. At around **** billion dollars, crude petroleum oils and oils from bituminous minerals were the second-most exported product group in Brazil. It was followed by iron ore that made up approximately **** billion dollars of the exported value for this South American country. 

Brazil’s leading trade partners

Brazil’s leading trade partners in 2023 were spread across four continents – North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. China was by far the main trade partner of Brazil, both in terms of import and export, exceeding a total trade value of 150 billion U.S. dollars. The distribution, however, was rather uneven, as the export value exceeded the import value significantly. In the case of the United States, this distribution was more balanced, as Brazil only imported slightly more than it exported. Except for Brazil’s economic recession in the mid-2010s, the total value of U.S. trade in goods with Brazil has remained strong and improved continuously over the last 20 years.

Brazil’s trade balance and GDP

When looking at the trade balance of goods in Brazil over the past decade, the South American country only registered a trade deficit (negative trade balance) in 2013 and 2014. The remaining years, albeit showing fluctuations, the nation generated a trade surplus (positive trade balance). In addition to a stable trade balance, Brazil is the country with the highest gross domestic product in Latin America and the Caribbean, further demonstrating its economic strength.
