The number of electric vehicle charging stations in Romania increased considerably over the last years. If in 2014 there were only ** recharging points, by 2020 the number increased to ***. This represented a natural consequence of the higher demand for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in Romania, which doubled their numbers in 2020 compared to the previous year. Moreover, the number of battery electric cars in the country amounted to over *** vehicles as of 2020.

Electric vehicle registration

In the first nine months of 2020 there were nearly *** thousand green vehicles registered in the country, the majority of them being hybrid. When it comes to preferred or accessible electric car brands, the most registered in 2020 were Renault and Skoda, each totaling over *** electric vehicle registrations. The number of new Tesla cars registered that year was rather small, totaling only ** vehicles. However, it is expected that the Tesla market will increase considerably in Romania, especially since Tesla opened their first showroom in Bucharest in ***, and is planning on opening a Tesla Service in the same year.

Romanians’ opinion on green vehicles

According to a survey conducted by Reveal Marketing Research in ***, over ** percent of respondents were considering switching to a hybrid car in the future, whereas ** percent would have preferred an electric car. The most important advantage of owning an electric car in 2021 was the fact that it contributed to a healthier environment by polluting less. Moreover, ** percent of respondents believed electric vehicles to be more efficient in terms of cost.
