According to the source, improved water sources are those which, by nature of their design and construction, have the potential to deliver safe water by preventing water contamination. Improved sources include piped water, boreholes or tube wells, protected dug wells, protected springs, and rainwater. Unimproved sources include unprotected dug wells or springs and surface water (e.g. lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, canals, irrigation ditches).
