The economy of the United Kingdom grew by 0.1 percent in May 2026, after shrinking by 0.1 percent in the previous month. The UK economy is currently around six percent larger than it was in February 2020, just before the start of COVID-19 lockdowns. After a record 19.6 percent decline in GDP in April 2020, the UK economy quickly returned to growth in the following months and grew through most of 2021.

Cost of living crisis continues

In April 2026, over 79percent of people in the UK reported that their cost of living was higher than it was in the previous month, a huge increase from the previous month. Although lower than the peak in 2022 when over 90 percent of people reported a higher cost of living, households are clearly under severe pressure. While wage growth has outpaced inflation since July 2023, overall consumer prices were over 22 percent higher in early 2026 than they were in late 2021. According to recent estimates, living standards, as measured by changes in disposable income, fell by 3.2percent in 2022/23 but grew by around 3.1 percent in 2024/25.

Growth proving elusive due to long-term issues

After a brief recession hit the UK economy at the end of 2023, the UK has had reasonable levels of economic growth, with GDP growing by 0.6 percent in the first quarter of 2026. Compared with average levels of economic growth in the 1990s and 2000s, the UK's economic performance is lackluster. Long-term issues, such as low business investment, weak productivity growth, and regional inequality, have not been adequately addressed and will likely continue to hamper the economy going forward.
