Alternative data is used by investors to evaluate a company or investment that is not within their traditional data sources. For example, app usage or credit/debit card transactions fall under alternative data sources.
The source splits hedge fund manages into "market leaders" - defined as those managers that have been using alternative data for more than five years - and the "rest of the market", which includes managers that have been using alternative data for less than half a decade.

In 2020, alternative data was mainly used as a research tool to help better improve investment decisions among ** percent of hedge fund managers, who were classified as alternative data market leaders, and ** percent of the rest of the respondents using it for this particular purpose. Only ** percent of the alternative data market leaders and ** percent of the rest of the market used alternative data to help improve risk management and compliance models.
