According to a survey conducted in July and August 2020, more than half of the Japanese companies opposed the idea of the Olympics and Paralympics still being held in 2021 after the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Around ** percent suggested suspending the event entirely, while about ** percent speaking out in favor of a further postponement.
As a direct impact of COVID-19, the Japanese government announced the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games from **** to ****, retaining the name as Tokyo 2020.
