In 2024, lithium-ion batteries were by far the most used technology among large-scale battery storage installations in the United States. At the time, they represented around 98 percent of the roughly seven gigawatts of installed capacity in the country. Lithium-ion batteries have a high-energy density and low self-discharge combined with no memory effect, resulting in them holding full charge for a longer period of time compared to other technologies. Additionally, Li-ion batteries have a high cycle efficiency.
