In this statistic, the age standardized imprisonment rate is used in order to account for age differences between study populations.

In 2024, just under 5,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and just under 390 women per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander inhabitants were imprisoned in Australia. This was considerably higher than the non-Indigenous population and reflects an over-representation of Indigenous Australians in all levels of the justice system.
