From April 12 to April 21, 2020, nitrogen dioxide air pollution levels in São Paulo, Brazil have decreased by ** percent when compared to the first ten days of March, the highest reduction reported in the monitoring period. Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) is a gaseous air pollutant and has a direct connection to fossil fuel emissions.
In the following week, however, the city's pollution level was percent above the baseline.
Changes in air pollution levels are related to a reduction in industrial activity and traffic circulation in urban areas, a consequence of partial lockdown measures enforced in Brazil in an attempt to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The first case of the disease was reported in the South American country on February 26, with social distancing measures being implemented on March 19.
