As of 2022, the leading production capacities of Industrial Qatar Group (IQ) in its key petrochemical products were ethylene and methanol production at **** million metric tons and * metric tons. Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO) and Qatar Fuel Additives Company (QAFAC) are the two ventures of the petrochemicals business segment of Industrial Qatar Group (IQ). 

Key industry for the MENA region

Chemical production in the Middle East and Africa has consistently increased in recent years and is expected to continue this trend although at a much slower pace in the coming years. For example, the coke and refined petroleum market in the MENA region is expected to surpass *** billion U.S. dollars by 2025. Petrochemical investments play key role in Egyptian exports, although 2020 was a challenging year for their LNG exports. Three of the top five exporters of LNG in the MENA region are from the GCC while the remaining two are in North Africa. Apart from indigenous petrochemical production, companies in the region have taken steps to expand their global footprint.  

The future of petrochemical industry in the GCC region

In 2024, ADNOC, an Abu Dhabi-based company successfully took over German chemical giant Covestro for **** billion U.S. dollars. In recent years, counties in the region like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar have implanted policies to diversify their economies and reduce reliance on fossil fuel exports. Nevertheless, the production capacity highlights the importance of petrochemicals in the Middle East's industrial landscape, particularly as the region's chemical industry continues to grow.
