Current exempt conditions in England include: 'a permanent fistula which needs continuous surgical dressing or an appliance, a form of hypoadrenalism for which specific substitution therapy is essential, diabetes insipidus and other forms of hypopituitarism, diabetes mellitus, except where treatment is by diet alone, hypoparathyroidism, myasthenia gravis, myxoedema, epilepsy which needs continuous anticonvulsive therapy, a continuing physical disability which means you cannot go out without the help of another person, cancer.'

A survey of healthcare professionals in England in 2019, found that ** percent of respondents thought that chronic neurological conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, should be included in the list of medical conditions which are exempt from prescription charges. Furthermore, ** percent of health workers believed that chronic respiratory conditions should also be added to the prescription charges exempt list, while ** percent also want mental disorders to be exempt.
