Figures displayed for respective years refer to crimes which became known to and were processed by police, including attempts threatened with a penalty and drug-related offences processed by customs. Statistical records follows submissions to the prosecutor’s office (baseline statistic).

Due to the transition to an individual dataset, in 2009 a first-time „authentic” crime suspect count was possible in Germany on a national level. This means that crime suspects who were conspicuous in several German states during the period of evaluation were recorded only once in national datasets. Up until and including 2008, this was only possible at state level due to aggregated data tables from states being delivered to the Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt). This led to overcounting on a national level. Therefore, from 2009 onwards, crime suspect numbers are no longer comparable to previous years.

It is noted that the data in this statistic is based on crime statistics recorded by the police and cannot include the results of criminal proceedings.
