After Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS, was discovered in Asia in February 2003, Hong Kong and China both experienced the most severe economic impact from the disease, both in the short term and the long term. One year after the SARS outbreak, Hong Kong experienced a 2.63 percent drop in real GDP, while China experienced a 1.05 percent drop. Ten years later, this had expanded to a 3.21 percent decline in Hong Kong's real GDP, and a 2.34 percent decline in China's GDP.
