The source makes the following note about the methodology: “Based on reports regarding social security, the number of low-paid employees and those subject to social security payments is evaluated on a monthly basis, but with a half-year break. Due to submission deadlines and the amount of submissions, stable statistical results on employee numbers can be obtained only after this waiting period. But to satisfy the demand for timely results, the number of employees subject to social security payments is additionally evaluated with a waiting period of 2 to 3 months and then projected to 6-month numbers. When looking at the current data, it should be taken into account that an estimate is subject to uncertainty.

For comparison, in 2004 there were around ** employees. Numbers have been rising over the timeline under review, and only dropped during the Covid pandemic when tourism was widely restricted.
