On October 5, 2021, the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Church published a report on the extent of sexual violence perpetrated within the Church since 1950 in France. In addition to a devastating assessment of the situation, the report made several recommendations, including proposals for systemic reforms in Church governance, in some cases questioning traditions and rules that have been in place for hundreds of years.
The French and Catholics are generally very much in favor of a thorough reform of the religious institution. The idea of convening a council to "update" the Church is the one with the highest support (** percent among the French, ** percent among Catholics). The last council to reform the Catholic Church, the Second Ecumenical Council of the Vatican, took place between 1962 and 1965, and is commonly known as Vatican II.
