Effective May 10, 2025, marriage registration in China became available nationwide, allowing couples to register regardless of their place of residence. Previously, marriage or divorce registration in Shanghai was only permitted if at least one partner held official Shanghai residency (hukou). As a result, the statistics do not fully reflect all marriages and divorces among Shanghai residents. This policy change is expected to affect the number of registered marriages.
