The longest levee (also called dykes, embankments, and floodbanks)segment in the United States is located in West Bank, Louisiana, and is roughly *** miles long. Levees, or dykes, regulate water levels and prevent flooding from in river and coastal areas. Much of the levees in the United States are built and maintained by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. At times, levees are deliberately breached in order to flood areas and prevent flooding elsewhere. The longest levees in the United States run along the Mississippi River, which were built after the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 to prevent future flooding.
