In fiscal year 2024, the number of active liquified petroleum gas customers across India was over *** million. Under the government's Ujjwala scheme to provide free and clean cooking fuel to every household, the south Asian country became the second largest consumer of LPG across the globe. The aim of the scheme was to replace traditional cooking fuels in rural areas such as firewood and cow dung as they contribute to environmental degradation and also have adverse health effects.
