Where would you buy your dog or your cat from? In Belgium, there were four places to acquire such a pet: from a breeder, an individual, a pet store or a shelter. Yet in 2019, some ways are preferred to others, depending on the animal.

In 2019, more than a third of Belgians were buying their dogs from breeders, making it the most common way to purchase one. The number one place to get a cat, on the contrary, was a shelter. Such an option was much less frequent for purchasing a dog. However, breeders were also a common place to purchase cats.
