The fertility rate of a country is the average number of children that women from that country will have throughout their reproductive years. From 1850 until 1925, Portugal's fertility rate stayed between four and 4.5 children per woman, dropping below four just briefly at the turn of the twentieth century. From 1920 onwards the fertility rate decreases gradually, with the decline slowing between 1945 and 1970, as a worldwide 'baby boom' swept across much of the globe. From 1970 the fertility rate drops again to below 1.5 children per woman in 1995, however the rate of decline then slows from this point until today, and the fertility rate is expected to be 1.3 in 2020.
