According to FAO, "the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) is an estimate of the proportion of the population whose habitual food consumption is insufficient to provide the dietary energy levels that are required to maintain a normal active and healthy life".

In Latin America and the Caribbean, the subregion with the highest prevalence of undernourishment was the Caribbean, where approximately 17.5 percent of the population was estimated to have an insufficient food intake to maintain an active and healthy life. Cental America was the subregion with the second largest prevalence, at five percent. The regional average was forecasted at 5.4 percent.
