Livestock production in Indonesia

Chicken, duck, goat, and cattle make Indonesia's largest livestock population. Currently, breeding draft animals for agriculture and transportation is still considered a priority over producing meat and milk in the country. In highly populated areas, particularly in Java and Madura, large ruminants are kept primarily for work animals and to produce manure. On the other hand, cattle in savanna regions with a lower population density are primarily raised for meat production and as livelihood assets.

Indonesia relies on imports to cover domestic demand

Most of the livestock in Indonesia are raised by smallholders with limited knowledge of animal husbandry, and government programs regarding meat sufficiency also have not proved efficient. Hence, Indonesia's livestock sector, especially the cattle industry, has struggled to keep up with the rising domestic demand, necessitating imports of live cattle and packaged beef from other countries. Given the projected increase in per-capita beef consumption as well as overall population growth, Indonesia will likely continue to struggle to provide enough beef by itself for the foreseeable future.
