Approximately 10,000 people across ten countries were asked how concerned they were about the environmental impacts of product packaging. Those in developing countries were typically more concerned about these impacts. In Brazil, ** percent of respondents said they were extremely or very concerned about water pollution caused by product packaging, while just ** percent in Japan shared those concerns. In India and and Indonesia, ** percent and ** percent of respondents were extremely or very concerned about marine litter, respectively. These two countries are responsible for millions of tons of mismanaged plastic waste ending up in oceans every year. The U.S. is also one of the biggest contributors to marine litter, but just ** percent of respondents were very concerned over this environmental impact.
