Revenues of the Austrian inland freight water transport industry are projected to decline drastically from a decade high of *** million U.S. dollars in 2011 to only ** million U.S. dollars by 2022. Amongst key reasons include the falling investments in the transport infrastructure, and the growing user preference towards alternate transport services such as road and rail. In fact, water transport accounts for less than five percent of the country’s total inland freight transport, with road transport accounting for a majority ** percent and rail transport accounting for ** percent. As of 2018, the amount of freight transported by inland waterways was nearly *** billion tonne-kilometers.
