There were 344 traffic fatalities recorded in Austria in 2020. The number of road related deaths has been steadily decreasing, thanks to increased efforts on a local, national and EU level. The highest figure was seen at the beginning of the reporting period in 2006 at 730 fatalities. In 2020, Austria ranked nineteenth in a list of highest number of
traffic fatalities per million inhabitants in Europe.
Non-fatal road accidents
Figures for those
non-fatally injured had initially decreased to 45,024 in 2011, before rising again in the following years. In 2018, there had been 46,525 people injured while on the road.

In 2018, there were over 4.9 million
registered passenger cars in the country. This was a growth of roughly 66 percent compared to 1990 and approximated a
motorization rate of 562 cars per 1,000 inhabitants in the same year.
