Space tourism - statistics & facts
Space tourism is the burgeoning field of human space travel for recreation and/or leisure. There are a variety of options for those interested in recreational space travel including, but not limited to, orbital space travel and sub-orbital space travel. Orbital space travel refers to a space flight in which the spacecraft remains in space for at least one orbit. The estimated revenue of the orbital space tourism market worldwide amounted to roughly 385 million U.S. dollars in 2021, and this figure was forecast to reach 555 million U.S. dollars by 2030. Meanwhile, suborbital space travel refers to a space flight that reaches outer space but does not complete one orbital revolution or reach escape velocity. Future options for space tourism may include trips to Earth鈥檚 moon, other planets such as Mars, and space hotels. As it stands, the market is still young and developing. When surveyed in 2021, adults in the United States believed that private companies focused on space exploration will become profitable in the next ten years.
