From the strategic chokepoints of the Red Sea to the vital transit of the Panama Canal, Hapag-Lloyd has established itself as a longstanding figure in global container shipping. The Hamburg-based firm was established in 1970 through a merger of Hamburg-American Line (HAPAG) and Norddeutscher Lloyd. In 2024, Hapag-Lloyd was the fifth-largest container ship operator worldwide, controlling over seven percent of the global container ship fleet. Furthermore, as of September 2025, the company was operating around 325 container ships with a capacity of roughly 2.4 million TEUs.
