Electricity in Switzerland - statistics & facts
The electricity market in Switzerland serves both domestic and international customers. Heavily reliant on water resources for electricity generation, Switzerland produces a surplus of electricity in the summer months but remains a net-import of electricity in the winter months, to satisfy a national electricity demand per capita among the largest in Europe. In 2017, a referendum resulted in the decision to withdraw from nuclear power. No new reactors will be constructed after the shutdown of the four operational nuclear units in Switzerland.
