From boardrooms to digital platforms, the global consulting industry has become a central engine of business transformation. Worldwide, the management consulting market has expanded significantly over the past decade, with the United States alone accounting for a market approaching 400 billion U.S. dollars by 2024. This sustained global growth reflects organizations’ rising dependence on external expertise to address complex challenges, from digital transformation and data strategy to sustainability and regulatory pressure. Yet behind the headline expansion, the worldwide sector is contending with shifting economics and rapidly evolving client expectations.
Although the global consulting industry continues to grow in overall market value, firm-level economics present a more nuanced picture. Average revenue per consultant at management consultancies worldwide has declined from its recent peak to roughly 197,000 U.S. dollars in 2024, pointing to intensifying competition, fee pressure, and a shift toward lower-margin services. Global revenue per employee followed a similar downward path, settling at around 160,000 U.S. dollars annually, highlighting the challenge of sustaining historical productivity levels across regions. At the same time, performance is diverging within the global market: for example, PwC’s global advisory revenue almost doubled between 2017 and 2025, rising from about 12 billion to over 24 billion U.S. dollars, as it shifted more towards the advisory business. These dynamics illustrate how large global players and focused specialists can still outgrow the overall market, even as average economics come under strain.
Consulting remains one of the most attractive global career paths for both top graduates and experienced hires. At leading firms in major markets, entry-level consultants with MBA or PhD degrees can earn total annual compensation approaching 280,000 to 290,000 U.S. dollars including performance bonuses. However, mounting operational challenges are testing firms’ ability to deliver consistently across regions. The share of consulting projects completed on time worldwide has fallen noticeably in recent years, from more than 86 percent in the early 2020s to around 78 percent by 2024. As global clients sharpen their focus on measurable outcomes and time-to-value, the tension between growth ambitions and execution quality is becoming more acute.
The global consulting sector now stands at a pivotal juncture, where traditional advisory models meet powerful new technologies and rising demand for specialized expertise. The integration of artificial intelligence, the rapid expansion of sustainability-focused advisory work, and the ascent of hyper-specialized firms across key markets are reshaping competitive dynamics and client expectations worldwide. Looking ahead, success will hinge on a variety of factors, ranging from firms’ ability to adapt quickly to shifting client needs to operating environments around the globe to firms’ capacity to innovate service delivery models, harness technology effectively, and uphold the operational excellence that has historically differentiated top performers.Â
