Pet food industry in Mexico - statistics & facts
In 2019, Mexico ranked among the largest pet food markets worldwide and the second biggest market in Latin America, only after Brazil. As the preferred pets in Mexican households are dogs and cats, these animals are the ones dominating pet food sales in the country. The production volume of dog and cat food was estimated to reach 1.2 million metric tons in 2020. Leading pet food companies worldwide Mars and Nestlé accounted for the largest share of pet food retail sales in Mexico. Pet food brands as Pedigree and Whiskas, owned by Mars, and Purina Dog and Cat Chow, marketed by Nestlé, were the pet food heavyweights in the Mexican market, with a combined market share of more than 60 percent.
