Ranked among the leading supermarkets in the U.S., Albertsons Companies, Inc., has expanded its business operations since its founding in 1939 in Boise, Idaho. With more than 2,270 stores and 290,000 employees, Albertsons is already one of the largest supermarket chains in North America. A proposed merger with with Kroger, the leading supermarket chain in the United States, was expected to shake up the country's retail market. The idea was that, together, the two companies would dominate the U.S. supermarket industry and compete with retail giant Walmart. However, the merger was halted by a judicial ruling, following arguments that it would lead to higher prices for consumers and lower wages for workers by diminishing competition.
