In 2023, Aldi operated stores in the United States and thus became the leading supermarket in terms of number of locations in the country, surpassing Kroger. Aldi was founded in Essen, Germany, in 1946 by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht and developed into a successful discount supermarket chain. The reason for its success in the U.S. could be linked to its competitive prices: in 2022, nearly ** percent of Aldi's sales came from private label products.
