In the United States, bankruptcy is a legal process that individuals or businesses go through when they are unable to balance their debts. The number of bankruptcy cases filed varies greatly between different states. In 2023, there were 36,145 non-business bankruptcy filings in California, which was the highest amongst all U.S. states. Florida, Georgia, Illinois, and Ohio rounded off the top five states with the highest number of non-business bankruptcy claims in 2023. That same year, the state that reported the highest amount of business bankruptcy filings was Texas, with 2,873 cases. Alaska and Vermont were the states with the lowest number of business and non-business filings in 2023.
