While it is generally accepted that tennis originated around 1,000 years ago in France, the modern form of the sport can trace its origins back to England in 1873. That year, Major Walton Clopton Wingfield drew up the first set of rules for what he termed Sphairistik茅 but is now known as lawn tennis. Four years later, the world鈥檚 oldest tennis competition, the Wimbledon Championships, was held for the first time at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club鈥檚 grounds, and the sport has flourished in the United Kingdom ever since.
