Many Korean students are expected to 鈥渟tudy hard and get into a good university.鈥 In South Korea, there is a strong emphasis on academic achievement, especially when it comes to getting into a prestigious university. The societal emphasis on one鈥檚 academic background, particularly in terms of higher education, is undeniable and is considered the most important factor for social mobility. While many parents feel that public schools are incapable of developing students鈥 talents, they enroll their children in private education programs such as tutoring or after-school classes at private academies, known as Hagwons.
